Number of overnight stays in the first quarter

In the first quarter of 2022, the number of overnight stays in France was 11.3% lower than in the first quarter of 2019. The decrease was 16.4% in hotels and 1.2% elsewhere. On the other hand, the tourist occupancy rate remained lower by -36.7 percent or -5.0 million nights.

Situation in the markets

French Statistical Office Insee said in a statement; In the first quarter of 2022, hotel overnights by European customers in mainland France remained -27.1% lower than in the first quarter of 2019, while the decline outside the EU was -53.7%.

Customer traffic from the UK is 44% lower than in the first quarter of 2019. For German customers, the decrease was 30.0%. However, overnight stays increased by +16% for Dutch customers.

On the other hand, overnight stays in touristic residences returned to their pre-crisis level and increased by 1%.

Situation at the facilities

Foreigners made 21% of the total 57.3 million overnight stays. The decrease in total overnight stays was -11.3% and -30.9% in tourists.

Foreigners made 23.9% of the total 35.7 million overnight stays in hotels. The overall decrease was -7.1% and the decrease in tourists was -36.7%.

34.4% of the 9.9 million overnight stays in 4 and 5 star hotels were made by foreigners. While total nights increased by 2.3%, tourist overnight stays plunged to -35.2.

On the other hand, 23% of 13.8 million overnight stays in 3-star hotels were provided by foreigners. While the decrease in total overnight stays was -12.3%, it was 34.9% for foreigners.
