According to the data compiled by Turizmdatabank from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s accommodation statistics, the overnight stay gap created by Russia and Ukraine, which entered the war in 2022, in Turkey’s hotels compared to 2019, was closed by England and Germany.
Compared to 2019, in the 9-month period of 2022, Russian tourist overnight stays in hotels decreased by 7.2 million and Ukrainian overnight stays decreased by 2.5 million. In contrast, German overnight stays in Turkish hotels rose by 3.8 million and British overnight stays rose by nearly 5 million. On the other hand, there was a significant increase in overnight stays in the markets of Poland, Iran, Kazakhstan and Israel.
Sources of overnight increases and decreases
Compared to 2019, in the 9-month period of 2022, 55% of the total loss of overnight stays in hotels originated from Russia and 20% from Ukraine. On the other hand, China also took 10% of the loss.
The sources of the increase in overnight stays were England with 20% and Germany with 16%. On the other hand, Poland, Kazakhstan, Iran and the USA each got a share of the increase with an average of 5%.
